The visual elements of colour, shape, line, tone, form, pattern and texture are the building blogs of art. Whole books have been written on each of these elements, because analysing them reveals how they combine to create an artwork’s overall effect.
When you attend Sunshine Coast art classes, you learn that visual elements have a relationship with one another. Most images start off as line drawings that cross over one another to form shapes. These shapes may then be filled with colour to create pattern and tone. The shape is then given a rough or smooth surface depending in the artist, and this gives it texture. Projected into three dimensions, the shape then takes its form.
Each element may also be used on their own to give an artwork a particular character. Different elements can express a wide range of emotions—from movement, space, structure, depth, and contrast—to make up subjects of great art.
Below are some of the basic elements of art, by definition.
Line –the foundation of all drawing, and the first and most versatile art element. Line can divide space and volume, but at the same time, they can also be used to unite elements together.
Shape -are two-dimensional spaces defined by a line or by contrast to its surroundings.
Colour – the visual element that offers the strongest effect emotions, colour is often used to evoke the mood or atmosphere of an artwork. It has three properties, namely hue, intensity, and value.
Pattern – is achieved when elements are repeated or echoed. Pattern is meant to communicate rhythm, movement, harmony, contrast, and/or balance. It comes in two basic types—natural and man-made. As the name suggests, natural patterns are inspired by nature, while man-made patterns are used more for structural and decorative purposes. Australia-based buy-art-online stores such as GoArty are great sources of the latter.
Texture – the surface quality of an artwork, texture refers to the sensation that a surface gives off, whether by touch (physical) or by sight (optical). A skilled artist can create the illusion of texture in an artwork.
